THE AROMA OF CHRIST – WHAT IS IT?
I met a Nigerian pastor named John while I was in Uganda speaking at a Christian conference in May 2023. Pastor John invited me to come to Nigeria, to a town called Ikot Abasi, as a guest speaker. I thanked him for the invitation and told him I would bring it to prayer and get back to him later. Before committing to anything, I always ask Jesus: "Am I supposed to go? Is this Your calling for me as my employer?" This is how the Lord has instructed me to proceed.
After returning home to Finland from Uganda, I knelt one morning and asked Jesus if I should go to Nigeria. I had barely whispered my request when I was overwhelmed by the powerful presence of the Holy Spirit. In His grace, the Lord answered me immediately: "Go, Satu, go. Yes, this invitation is from Me." The Holy Spirit then gave me the message I was to share there. I immediately opened my diary and wrote down several pages of the message. I was stunned by the powerful manifestation of the Lord. I was filled with immense joy and gratitude for such a clear answer—and for the privilege of following Him. I contacted Pastor John and told him I would accept the invitation.
I began preparing for the trip in July 2023. Pastor John was also excited and began planning a two-week tour in Ikot Abasi. This is an old village in southern Nigeria with a dark history. It was once a major point for capturing and shipping thousands upon thousands of Africans across the ocean to be sold as slaves in America. I realized this place was different. It wasn't just some small rural village in Nigeria—it had a deeply dark past. If any place needed the presence of Jesus Christ and the light of God, it was this one. And now, in His mercy, the Lord was sending me there to proclaim His Word.
Because the Almighty God is my employer, no one had the right to question whether it was wise
for a white woman to travel alone to unstable region in Nigeria. Yes, Nigeria is extremely dangerous, especially for a lone white woman. The Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs even advised against traveling there. But when the Lord calls and sends—I go. I trust in Him alone.
Preparing for a trip like this requires the intercessory prayers of faithful brothers and sisters. It also means quieting one's surroundings, spending time in stillness before the Lord, and lingering in His presence. Prayer and reading the Word were central to this preparation. The Lord had promised that in addition to the one sermon, He would give me more to proclaim—and He did. On the night before my flight, He gave me another sermon. He also told me that He would let me know on site which of previous evelations I should share. And that is exactly what happened.
Then one night—perhaps two weeks before the trip—a miracle happened. I awoke suddenly from deep sleep at around 3 a.m. to an incredible, overwhelmingly beautiful and powerful smell of aroma . It wasn’t just in my bedroom—it filled my entire apartment! Even though I have strong allergies, this scent caused no reaction. I was in complete awe. I sat up and turned on the lights. The smell of the aroma was so astonishing! I began asking the Lord, “What is this?! Is it You, Jesus Christ?” There are no words to describe it. I praised and thanked my Savior. I laughed out loud and tears streamed down my face. I breathed in that heavenly scent and felt overwhelming joy—as if oil of gladness had been poured over me. The smell of aroma healed and strengthened me. Eventually, I fell asleep again.
In the Gospel of John, chapter 12, verse 3, it says: "Then Mary took half a litre of a very expensive perfume made of pure nard, poured it on Jesus´feet, and wiped them with her hair. The sweet smell of the perfume filled the whole house.
When I woke in the morning, the smell of the perfume was gone. I thought to myself—it must have been the aroma of Christ. I had never experienced anything like it before, nor heard of it, but I knew it was from God. I shared this experience with a few friends in faith, and they all said the same: "Satu, that was the Aroma of Christ. The Lord anointed and strengthened you for your mission in Nigeria. This anointing is exactly what you need for that journey. Just give thanks for His presence."
In 2 Corinthians Paul writes about the triumphal procession in Christ: 14-17 But thanks be to God, who always leads us as captives in Christ’s triumphal procession and uses us to spread the aroma of the knowledge of him everywhere. For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. To the one we are an aroma that brings death; to the other, an aroma that brings life. And who is equal to such a task? Unlike so many, we do not peddle the word of God for profit. On the contrary, in Christ we speak before God with sincerity, as those sent from God.
And indeed—the journey was filled with danger. I almost died. But Isaiah 59:1 assures us:
“Surely the arm of the Lord is not too short to save, nor his ear too dull to hear.” Amen.
